Everyone needs help sometimes. Life is like that. In fact, God planned it to be that way. Mortality presents each of us with a wide variety of experiences, and some are easier to manage than others. No matter the experience, there is always help. That’s part of God’s plan too.

Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures cooler, I love watching the colors in the mountains fade from

green into fall colors. Fall is by far my favorite time of year. I look forward to the holidays, time spent with

family and kids returning to school. But most of all, I think fall is the most beautiful time of year.

Lately I have been thinking about the tradition of celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in spring time.

Everything in spring is often thought to represent new life, new birth and a fresh start. The thawing earth

and blooming flowers of Easter are often used as a direct metaphor for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

So on that theme, my mind has often wondered if autumn can be used as a metaphor for the Fall of Adam

and Eve. At first glance this might seem like it does not fit as well. How can this be an effective metaphor

when the Fall of man brought death, sadness and separation from God—and autumn is so beautiful and cozy

and beloved?! Maybe it’s time to reframe the way we view the Fall.

The Fall is the single moment on earth that enabled each of us to come to earth! To experience joy, sadness

and growth, but most importantly, enabled us to follow God’s plan of Salvation. We would not be here

without the Fall...so why do we surround it with so many sad connotations? God’s plan has many names—it

has often been called the plan of happiness. This gives me a new way to read the scripture, “Adam fell that

men might be; and men are that they might have joy.” (2 Nephi 2:25)

Next time you find yourself gazing at the beauty of this earth, particularly through the fall leaves, what if you

let those golden colors remind you of the beauty of God’s perfect plan for His children? Let the fall colors

remind us that although we are in an imperfect world, it is beautiful! Heavenly Father sent us to experience

joy, not only after this life, but during this life! (Remember how much fun we can have skiing in all that

snow?!—when the world seems dead?!) Let us find joy and beauty in the imperfection and end of things. Let

them be a symbol of God’s plan that is perfect because they come with the hope and promise of rebirth and

new life to come!
