Everyone needs help sometimes. Life is like that. In fact, God planned it to be that way. Mortality presents each of us with a wide variety of experiences, and some are easier to manage than others. No matter the experience, there is always help. That’s part of God’s plan too.

Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,

In D&C 58:3 we read: “Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation.”

This past month, I went on a trip with my family to the upper Oregon Coast. While preparing for this trip, my daughter and I became interested in reading from the journals of Lewis and Clark. We visited Fort Clatsop National Historic Park and learned more about the Corps of Discovery and its ties to Cape Disappointment in Washington. We were very intrigued by the name Cape Disappointment and wanted to learn more about what happened there.

Cape Disappointment was named by the British fur trader John Meares who searched in 1788 for a river that was charted by an earlier Spanish explorer Heceta in 1775. Due to fog, rough water, high waves, and sand bars, Meares did not find the river. In his logbook Meares indicated that it was only a shallow bay and named the tall headland beside the bay, Cape Disappointment, out of frustration over his failure to find the river. In 1792 Captain Robert Gray from Boston found the mouth of the river. He was able to navigate the river that he named after his ship, the Columbia.

We visited Cape Disappointment State Park on the northern tip of the mouth of the Columbia River. The park overlooks the dangerous Columbia River Bar, which has been called the “Graveyard of the Pacific”. Despite the gloomy names, we witnessed the breathtaking beauty of the ocean cliffs, with giant waves crashing against them, the scenic beaches, and the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. We were having a completely different experience than some others had in visiting this place.

My daughter and I kept reflecting on the naming of Cape Disappointment. We couldn’t help but compare it to times in our life when we wanted a certain outcome that did not materialize. We could miss what was there that was beautiful, meaningful, and good, even though it was not what we were focused on. Maybe good can come out of an unexpected and unwanted turn of events. Certainly it is an opportunity for growth. Later in the week we noticed things that didn’t go to plan and tried to not let it put us off.

Another irony that I thought about was that the river was there the whole time. Meares could not see the river for the fog. Cape Disappointment is known as being one of the foggiest places in the US. It is cited as having 2,552 hours of fog a year, or 106 days of fog.

We are taught in D&C 90:24 “Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.”
